Cafe 101 sits conveniently within the Cesar Chavez Student Center at San Francisco State University, shaping much of its personality around the campus crowd. The café attracts a steady flow of students and staff who appreciate a reliable coffee spot without the trappings of bigger chains. It’s a casual, no-fuss space that works well for quick pick-me-ups between classes or low-key social hangouts.

The coffee here leans toward thoughtful basics done well, including espresso-based drinks like mochas and lattes made with various milk options including almond milk, which caters well to vegan and dairy-free preferences. The espresso has been noted for its quality, holding its own next to more expensive counterparts elsewhere in the city. Seasonal and specialty items like the ube ice cream affogato bring unexpected flavors into the mix, appealing to those wanting to try something a bit different alongside their caffeine fix.

Pastries and snacks round out the offering — expect honest, substantial muffins rather than petite cupcakes, and an apple fritter is among the go-to choices. Vegan options are clearly important here, with customers regularly mentioning both vegan pastries and breakfast wraps, though some items like the vegan wrap can be elusive due to frequent sell-outs. Pricing is generally fair and often more affordable compared to nearby coffee chains, though some visitors note that pastry prices aren't posted upfront, which can catch newcomers off guard when checking out.

Inside, the café offers ample space to gather, making it a natural spot for students to grab breakfast, lunch, or a snack while tackling their coursework or meeting friends. While it's a smaller café, the seating area doesn’t feel cramped, supporting the social vibe that defines much of the daily rhythm here. The busiest moments tend to align with class breaks, so aiming for mid-morning or early afternoon visits might mean less waiting.

  • Best for: Students and staff looking for affordable, quality coffee with vegan-friendly choices.
  • Atmosphere: Casual and practical with a social, campus-centric feel.
  • Ideal visit times: Mid-morning or early afternoon to avoid potential lines.
  • Noteworthy menu items: Ube ice cream affogato, vegan banana nut bread, apple fritter, espresso con panna.

Overall, Cafe 101 fits seamlessly into the SFSU community as a welcoming spot that balances accessibility, variety, and respect for dietary needs without unnecessary fuss. It’s less about style and more about substance, serving up dependable coffee and a handful of treats that keep locals coming back.

Cheaper than Starbucks. They don't ask my name every time I order a latte. And they have several vegan items! The servers are very polite. An asset to the SFSU community.

I've only been on campus for 2 days and I've ordered their drinks and vegan banana nut bread for both. I got a mocha and vanilla latte, both with almond milk and no whipped cream. Both vegan and delicious! Truly, I'm just waiting for the day I can try their vegan breakfast wrap (it's always out of stock) and other vegan pastries.

Got a muffin for $3.50 and it's an actual muffin not cupcake-sized muffin. Lost 1 star just because they don't have pastries prices up, you find out only when you checkout. Overall, pretty good.

Great coffee, pastries, and ice cream at fair prices. There's usually a line here and for good reason: it's worth the wait. I had a single shot affogato with ube ice cream. The espresso was great and the ube ice cream was tasty too. A biscotto (a piece of biscotti) was placed on top. The price was $4.25, which is great considering that you can be charged $5 for just a scoop of ice cream in some parts of San Francisco. I've been here before for mango ice cream and espresso con panna, both of which were inexpensive and tasty. They serve Mitchell's ice cream, which is local, and their espresso has a rich flavor and isn't very bitter, plus all their coffee is organic. Finding a place to enjoy their items isn't an issue, because there's plenty of seating nearby.

I love their coffee but it has been 3 times that I have asked for soy milk on my cappuccino but I get it with regular cows milk. I had very bad symptoms, my stomach was super upset since I'm lactose intolerant. They need to be more careful with making sure they use the milk that their clients ask for.

Great stop for caffeine or non-caffeine drinks here. They sell a range of different pastries including donuts, muffins, and croissants. Lines can get long especially when 9 a.m. classes are about to start but service is quick. Seating is also plentiful.
